We want to express our deepest sympathy to Skip, Garrett, Dylan, and all who loved Maureen. Today on her birthday we are thinking about her and celebrating her and her love of life! She touched so many... Our friendship started many years ago when we all worked at Head Start together(for round numbers, 25ish years ago). Our friendship grew and we became family. Our husbands, children, and grandchildren love and miss her dearly. We have had so many good times because Maureen brought all the fun.... nose flutes, googly eyes, fun games, special treats. She always thought of everything! Our girls weekends will never be the same. If we forgot something it was always OK because Maureen would have covered us. Maureen will always have a special place in our hearts! She will forever live on in our memories! We love you Maureen... we miss your happy face, and laugher! We look forward to the day we will get to all party in heaven together again! Love you always, Cheryl, Jasmine & Tracy.

She's the one you've known forever. The one you go to for honest advice The one who accepts your quirky little habits and understands you in a way few others can. She's the one you can call at any hour - to laugh or cry or complain . . . The one whose voice has been there all along, sharing secrets and dreams and singing your song when you needed to hear it most. She's the one who can read your mind, hear your heart, and love you just the way you are. She's your lifelong friend . . . but so much more. She's your sister. (from a Hallmark card but it tells it all)

My Aunt Maureen was the most genuine and kind soul to ever grace this Earth. It has taken me some time to compose this, because I was -and still am- in shock that she is really gone. How do you put someone so special into a short message? I do not think that it is possible for me to say everything I wish to say, and I am sure you all feel the same. When I envision my Aunt Maureen, I think about youth, happiness, fun, adventure, family, and SO much love. She really knew how to make me feel like I was the most special person in the world. My twin sister Cindy and I received stickers in our birthday cards every year, up until high school. I used to think this was so silly, but as I look back on it now, I truly think that those stickers were a symbol of my aunt's thoughtful, funny, and fantastic character. I will cherish these cards forever. I am extremely grateful I was able to visit Aunt Maureen, Uncle Skip, and the rest of our 'Washington' family in December of 2019- the last time I was able to see 'Aunt Mo' in person. Every day of this trip was filled with adventure: shopping, cooking, baking, painting, looking at pictures, singing, and dancing around the kitchen. We were always laughing and planning our next adventure. Although Aunt Maureen is not physically with us anymore, her spirit lives on in each and every one of us. I can still see her smile, hear her laugh, and it breaks my heart that I will never feel her warm embrace again. Aunt Maureen, you are always in my heart and memories, and I will love you forever. I know you are dancing and singing up there, with Grandpa, Grandma, and Aunt Eileen.

My heart aches. You were such a light! Skip and you were the last people I saw before leaving the US for Switzerland. Those moments were magical and now they are precious memories. Maureen, in those few days together, you took me to many places and we shared so many deep conversations, laughter, tears. The funny story is that you knew I disliked purses but struggled to carry my stuff around, so you gave me this cool backpack... the only thing I've carried everywhere so far and now it is even more precious!

My dear sister...bear hugs, sparkly eyes, amazing laugh, sweet smile, always words of praise & encouragement. Maureen wished she had kept a diary. Shared photos & stories will forever be a reminder of her beauty. Letters, notes & greeting cards from mo , were filled to the edges with loving words and unique drawings. The dream catcher in her living room holds bits & pieces collected from family outings. Her clever Xmas village created a blast from our past, because instead of ceramic people, it is packed full of toy cartoon characters ( who else would think of that?! - so cool!). Maureen loved the colors light blue ( like the morning sky) & light green ( like a new baby leaf) ...she loved planning & dressing up for parties & play time with the kids ( as well as adults). In the words of tinkerbell ( mos favorite fairy) ; " When life makes you cry a hundred times, you have to smile a thousand times " ...your memory makes me smile. Miss you! Love you! Your sister, Pamela

Maureen and Skip brought their family to Washington state in 1984 (Garrett was 2 and Dylan 5 months old). I had moved to Washington six years earlier and was thrilled that I would now have family close by to share my life with. In those early years Maureen was busy with her family and her day care business and I was busy with my teaching career and career related adventures in the summer but we always had time for family and get-togethers. The Himes’ spent every Christmas Eve at our house and we spent every Christmas Day (and Thanksgiving and Easter) at their house. We often met for dinner and a movie or a shopping excursion (especially at Christmas time) or just a walk with the dog. We were always there for each other to share the joys of everyday life and the sadness of loss (mom, Eileen). Once we both retired it was easier to spend time together either by ourselves, with our spouses and/or enjoying her grandkids. Music was always a big part of our lives and the four of us loved to attend concerts together – especially Irish music (we did let our spouses come along). She loved when family would come to visit and she could show them the sites. Reconnecting with cousins in the last few years brought her much joy. I will miss the little things: the box we passed back and forth every Christmas with a special Christmas ornament (beginning 2007 Maureen to me); the rides to Seattle every other Thursday when I had a music lesson; answering the phone to hear “Hello Sister” or “Hello Kate”. I will miss her smile, her laugh, her elaborate decorations at every holiday, her uninhibited antics: singing, dancing, dressing up in costumes. I will miss the nights she stayed overnight and we spent the morning having tea and talking. Maureen loved to entertain and everyone was invited – amazing potlucks and lots of fun. She was loved by everyone of multiple generations. She was Virge and Bob’s daughter, after all. She found great joy and pride in her nieces and nephews and loved each and every one. Her life lit up 10-fold when she had grandchildren – they were the center of her world. This is clearly evident when you glimpse the garage/playroom: dress up bins, art center, toys galore, a pool and toys ready to be assembled for summer – a kid’s paradise. I miss you, my dear sister and will miss you every day of my life. We were going to grow old together. Thank you for the gift of family –Skip, Garrett and Dylan are my heart. I will keep all of them close. You will be on my mind and in my heart every day until we meet again. Kate/Kathleen

How do I put into words my sadness at losing my dear cousin? Lucky was I to be born into the infamous Mahoney clan, among whom Maureen is and will always be, a shining star. For the past several years, my husband, Pete, and I spent significant chunks of time with my cousins Maureen (and Skip) and Kathleen (and Rick). We arrived with our home on our backs, ala our sailboat, and made Port Townsend, Washington, our seasonal homeport. Thus began the joy of hanging out with our cousins after moving away from Illinois 54 years ago. Both Pete and I were awed by my cousin's generosity. We even had our own room in their homes, though I'm guessing others also considered the rooms 'their rooms.' When we had medical appointments at Kaiser on Pill Hill in Seattle, we always stayed with Maureen and Skip. Maureen fed us delicious food, had parties filled with great energy (complete with dancing), and was unbelievably generous. Every time we left their house, Maureen would slip us a bag full of treats for our two-hour road trip. Her eyes sparkled when she laughed, which was a lot! Her laughter was contagious. Her warmth, so inviting. Both Pete and I miss Maureen so much. She became such an important person in our lives; it's hard to imagine Washington sans Maureen. She will always be in our hearts. .

A cousin I will never forget. She was about 4 years older than me, but she was always fun, not your typical teenager, one might say. Others, watch out kid, but not Maureen. She'd stop, have a laugh, play a game, and always a great smile. Rest in Peace, you will be missed.

What I have to say will probably resonate with every person who reads this, because, if you knew Maureen, you knew her. You knew she was a good soul, an exceptional human being. Maureen was my touchstone, even though we lived thousands of miles apart. If I hadn’t had a talk with Maureen in a bit, I didn’t feel quite right. I felt an urging – I have to call Maureen! When she picked up, it would be in her lyrical sing-song voice “Mary!!! I’ve been thinking about you!” How I will miss the sound of her voice. Still girl-like. Still my girlfriend from St. Denis. My friend with the fairy smile that lit up her face. With the exception of my own family, my relationship with Maureen is the longest of my lifetime. I was so blessed to have her as my friend and I treasure her friendship forever. We watched each other grow up and move away from our families, to start families of our own. Maureen & Skip’s beautiful family, so dear, so like her and Skip. I love you, Skip, Garrett and Dylan! You made her so happy. I could see her smile right through the phone when she spoke of you. And how could she not be that way when she had it modeled for her by Virge and Bob and her sisters! The whole Heidenreich-Mahoney clan. “Weren’t we lucky, Mary?” she said so many times over the years. Maureen’s sweetness and kindness were apparent to everyone. A few years back, Maureen & Skip visited us for Thanksgiving. What a gift! After dinner here at our house, we drove to my sister’s house with about 30 of my relatives. It was as if time had stood still. No awkward uncomfortable-ness for Maureen & Skip. No sir-ee! They just hit the road running. It is one of my fondest memories of them being with my family. Afterwards, I spoke with my siblings, who all spoke of them with the warmest regards, reminding me how lucky I was to have Maureen & Skip as friends. “Salt of the Earth”, as my Mom used to say. If you are reading this, I know you are nodding, yes. I will close with a memory of Maureen that is so dear to me. My children have summer birthdays. They are adults now. But every June and July, like clockwork, a fat envelope or a package arrives and Nellie or Matt will sing “You’ll never guess who it’s from!” Last year, Maureen purchased a pillowcase for Matt, who is at school in New York City. He had to show me. Look at this Mom. “CALL MOM!” in large letters on the pillowcase. So very Maureen.

For me there was no safer place than being in the arms of my mother. I will do my best to let the ripple of her life pass through me and onto others with the same love, unity and grace that she carried with her through all these years. Gone too soon. I love my Mom.

Maureen will forever be in Gary and my hearts and she will be thought about often. There are so many things, things you wouldn't think that would trigger memories. Her birthday and Christmas gifts that were little fun things that I am sure she had such joy in picking out. Her outlook on life was contagious and Maureen will be greatly missed. We love you and know you cherish being with your Mom and Dad, sister and others that went before you. Love you always.

Dearest Skip and family, It's been a long time since I've seen you all but think of you often. Whenever I got to saw Maureen, she beamed whenever she talked about you all. Skip, I know this is a rough time to go through because I have walked this road also. Believe me when I say, it does get more tolerable. You never quit loving them less...just easier to cope. My prayers are with you all. God Bless, Ginger Waite
